The third main publisher of the Transformers comics is IDW
Publishing, a division of Idea + Design Works. Before acquiring the Transformers
licence in 2005, the company was perhaps best known for its many comic books based on TV series, like 24,
Angel, CSI and The Shield. They are starting over with a new Transformers continuity, and have
recruited, among others, writer Simon Furman and several former Dreamwave artists to work on the comics.
Early reports indicated that IDW would start cautiously with a single Transformers title, but the list of titles seems
to be growing quite rapidly.
IDW does not publish an ongoing Transformers comic book, but several of the mini-series are connected to each other,
forming a continuity. Transformers: Infiltration and Transformers: Stormbringer were the first two parts, and
they will be followed by a third story arc called Escalation.
The mini-series Beast Wars: The Gathering will also be followed by more mini-series, and there has been hints
about profile books based on the Beast Wars universe. Yet another series starting in 2006 is Transformers:
Evolutions, an Elseworlds/What If-like title exploring alternate realities where Transformers show up
in other eras, like for instance the late 1800's. Finally, Simon Furman has recently hinted that IDW will publish a
series of Transformers one-shots, each focusing on a different character. In addition to these original stories, IDW
is also reprinting select issues from Marvel's old Transformers comic, under the label Transformers:
Generations, and in late 2006 Bob Budiansky and Don Figueroa will create a new, expanded version of the Transformers
Animated Movie Adaptation.
