Rumor: Jason Statham cranked for the next Transformers movie (I think that he won't be in it, but the mention of "darker dircetion" sounds interesting)
Don Murphy comments on the future of the movie franchise

Let the speculation begin.

It's quite sure that "Bayformers" came to end of the road, but what's next? It's sure that there will be new movies, they make some serious money with them and if I remember correctly, some people from Hasbro said that (ROTF 2DVD bonus materials) they'll planned with Paramount to put out more movies... When it's confirmed by Bay himself that he will not direct the next one it's interesting to see if Murphy and Spielberg still continue. So according to Don Murphy the next trilogy will probably continue the story of DOTM. When all Bayformers are a bit in conflict with each other (plot holes) it's possible that in the case the next movie conitues DOTM-story, it may ignore some things from the first one and ROTF. It would be interesting to see if Ehren Kruger continues as a writer without Orci and Kurzman. I think that though DOTM was too human-oriented, he did very good job and with more character development of transformers and with a bit lesser human characters (and sidekicks) he would be quite good writer for the Transformers movie(s). But I admit that I would love to see some Furman-inspired story. biggrin.gif

But yeah, your thoughts? Reboot or not? It's rumored that Steven Spielberg would be an option to direct the next film... One reason why not reboot would be that they have those Bayforemrs robot designs, so they can use those and make the new ones based on that style instead of creating a whole new bunch of CGI-models.

A TF movie could be so much better than what we've gotten so far. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that a solid and comprehensive story is so much more important than explosions and 3D. Why not look to the original comics for plot, and get a creative and skilled writer to make the story more relevant? I'm hoping for a total reboot at least, with a plot revolving around the Autobots in dire need of energy, and an epic power struggle among Decepticons. The conflict between the bad guys in DOTM was laughable. Shockwave was obviously more powerful and menacing than both Megatron and Sentinel. No way would he bow down to any of them.

Or maybe we want something completely different? Do a variation of the Headmasters comic story. That doesn't even have to interfere with the continuity in the current three movies.

In a way I'd wish this would be the end for a good long time. I'm afraid it'll all end up with the same fate as those several Batman movies with their own interpretations etc, and no really solid "thin red line".

Else I'd would like to see a reboot/make of TFTM '86 in todays standard CGI with their old robotic designs - the story/plot should be 100% the same.

Frankly the next big 'bot movie I'd like to see would be Robotech/Macross smile.gif - much better story than the TF universe ever can come up with.

There's no reason why we can't have both. A film can include lots of heavy action, and still have a reasonably deep plot.

I agree. Restarting a movie franchise again and again just turns the whole concept into a joke. I feel the same thing about X-Men and Spider-Man - why should I bother with the new interpretations? I have already invested my feelings in the previous trilogies, and now they're just thrown aside as if they never existed.
If there is a fourth film, I want it to be a continuation of these three. Yes, Megatron is dead (and so is Soundwave and Starscream), but so what? He was killed and buried already in the first film, and he still came back. And there are still other Decepticons that can be introduced - I can hardly believe that I'm saying this as I haven't been a big fan of the character, but why not bring in Galvatron? (As a separate character, just like in IDWs comics).

I don't want to see either of those two in a direct adaptation to the movie screen. Both because we have seen those stories already and I want to see something new, and because I don't think either of them would be appealing enough to the general public, in their original forms. Headmasters isn't even set on Earth and doesn't feature any characters that are familiar to anyone but us nerds (plus that it is a bit low on action); TFTM has a quite weak story, and the huge threat doesn't pertain to us Earthlings - Unicron targets Cybertron, which is not a planet that the general movie-goes has any reason to care about. Basically TFTM requires that you have followed a series that precedes the film, otherwise there's no point in watching it.

But both stories contain elements that could be used for future films.

TFTM: It's a pity that Sentinel already tried to bring Cybertron into Earth's orbit (a plot idea that had many problems, particularly in that the film did not care to follow up on the many natural disasters that should have been caused by Cybertron's proximity), because having Earth being threatened by a huge planet (i.e. Unicron) would have been a great plot device for an upcoming film. Yes, ignore Cybertron all together, and bring Unicron on a course towards the Earth instead; steal an idea from Marvel comics, and let Unicron have a herald that he sends in advance to scout. This herald, whoever he is, could be powerful enough to resurrect Megatron, Starscream and whatever other recently dead Decepticons that we want to bring back - not necessarily with new names and personalities (the old iconic names are important), but maybe with stronger bodies. Naturally Unicron expects the revived Decepticons to serve him out of gratitude. Problem with every important Decepticon being dead after DOTM solved, in a perfectly acceptable way.
If we really want to, we can involve Creative Matrixes of Leadership or whatever too, as well as Rodimus - Unicron still fears the Matrix, so the revived Deceps are given the task to capture and destroy it. Optimus is seemingly killed in the Decepticon onslaught, but the newly introduced Autobot Rodimus turns out to have a mysterious connection to the Matrix and eventually takes charge of the forces that save the day. (I haven't really thought about this part; the important part is the setup, and how we get the chance to bring the familiar Deceps back.)

Headmasters: This is easy; there are many different ways that you could involve Headmasters into the movie series. It [i]should[i] take place on Earth of course, that's a necessity. So why not just say that the US government (and the rest of the world too) has grown tired of the Transformers battles. With the Decepticon threat stopped and the Autobots unable to return to a homeworld that has been destroyed (I'm assuming that Cybertron didn't survive the spacebridge being closed), the Autobots are still welcome to stay on Earth, but under one condition - absolutely no weapons. They must not be in control of their own weapons "ever again".
Naturally the peace doesn't last for ever, it doesn't even last for very long - another group of Decepticons, led by Scorponok, has traced the other Transformers to Earth, and now they start to wreak havoc. All sensible people can see that the Autobots are our best chance to strike back at the new Decepticons, but the world leaders and American military leaders are so insistent on maintaining their control that they can't allow the Transformers access to their equipment again. Cue a brilliant idea from someone (it's a pity that Que/Wheeljack is dead, because he would have been a good choice here) to let people pilot the Autobots in battle (here I'm borrowing more from the cartoon than from the comics). Naturally Lennox and Epps should be among the pilots.

Macross is definitely a better story. Watch the original japanese Macross anime and compare it with the G1 Cartoon and compare what went as a show for kids in the two countries.

Now, I doubt we'll see a Macross live action movie, since it's still an active show - and the Japanese audience seems to prefer anime. Frontier came out in 2009(?) was basically an updated version of the old show, and has now spawned two full length animated movies.

@ Groundsplitter
We obviously need explosions. It's Transformers after all. I just think that the explosions should mean something, and have a base in a good story - and most importantly good story telling, which is something Bay doesn't have. In DOTM, Chigago was totally destroyed, and never once did I feel it mattered.

When I think of it, the biggest change I'd like to see in another movie, besides better story telling, is the design of the robots. Yeah, the robots are aliens, but the plot is ridiculous either way, regardless of the way they look.

I agree with Lars if there are to be a new movie in the next couple of years then it should be a continuation. Either if some old expedition, containing whatever sort of characters, returns to find the destroyed Cybertron and then recieves Optimus message about Earth from the first movie and comes here and a new war suddenly erupts. Or a Unicron story, although I don't want a big enormous planet coming.. I just don't think it would work, but why not make him inte some sort of entity similar to Glorificus in Buffy or Doomsday in Smallville that was trapped inside the All-Spark by the original Primes and was released when it was destroyed and perhaps inhabited Sam?

If they are to make a new run at it then they would have to make new models for the Transformers to seperate the movies and I just don't see why they would invest that kind of money when at least all the Autobots remain and that they would probably need several years to go bye so that there is a distinct split between the series.

I dont want to see Unicron in a potential sequel. Even if the majority of the audience dont know who Unicron is, I am sick and tired of him. The same goes for Rodimus (or whatever he is called), I just cant stand that psycadelic hippie teen- bot (look at me, I am cool and relatable). One Bumblebee per version is enough (actually it´s one to many).

I also dont want to see dead bots return out of convinence and would prefer if the writers would take better care in who they kill instead of just going for instant chock- value without planning for the future of the story. Besides, both Optimus and Megatron have already returned from death in the live action films and if killing a character is going to mean something they cant bring them back all the time.

Have a cast of new Decepticons instead, maybe Scorponok or Thunderwing in command and have the story deal with something that happened millions of years ago (65 million or more). An elitegroup of Autobots land on earth when dinosaurs roamed the planet, either to search for something or hide it. Perhaps it could be a banned cybertronian technology that can merge organic tissue with cybertronian. They use this technology to take the form of the living animals of the time, complete with organic tissue to cover their robotic bodies (a nod to Beast Wars) and take the name Dinobots. Something goes wrong and they end up in stasis and wake up in modern day Earth with their original mission unfinished. I know the story has been told before but both ROTF and DOTM borrowed ideas from G1 and this one is less of a kliche and better in my opinion.

If you still want Headmasters, Megatron and his band of merry band of Decepticons to come back you can use this technology to do it. Perhaps a crooked organziantion steals the bodies of dead Decepticons (including the main cast from previous movies) and use the same technology to create Headmasters. It fails since the dead Deceptions begin to take control of their human pilots and replacing their personalities with their own. You could even have Hugo Weaving playing the Headmaster that gets binary bonded to Megatron and as such he can play the same character in two ways. Megatron could then begin a power struggle with the new Decepticon leader and eventually show that "might makes right" among the divided troops.

The Autobots could respond by bonding with the human cast but in a different way. They become Powermasters instead by bonding with those who are left from the original cast. A new main character (maybe Jason Statham) could be Optimus partner and the human side of the story could follow him.

Let the reason for the technology being banned due to it´s abilities to change organic worlds into cybernetic ones, a form of instant terraforming of you will. It would provide an excellent motive for the Decepticons who are in need of a new Cybertron. I know that instant, cybertronian terraforming has been done in the G1 cartoon as well, but it´s supposed to be a tribute to the canon.

Finally they could divide the story into two films and release them six months apart, complete with a cliffhanger in between.

Personally I’m tired of reboots in general but with some many of the big decepticons gone who or what would be the main antagonist? A “cleaning up the remaining decepticons on Earth”-story sounds dull and I’m not sure Unicron would work, kinda like Galactus didn’t really work in Fantastic Four…Perhaps Thunderwing could appear and try to steal the Matrix?

Perhaps you could expand the movie verse, go outside Earth and introduce other worlds. Transformers have been around for a long time it’s more then likely some of them moved to other planets, even before the war. I wouldn’t mind seeing Velocitron/Speedia or something. Like previous replies suggested with Beast Wars, why not introduce the Predacons in some way? Be it with animal altmodes or cybertronian animal-like modes.

They could make a prequel, but it feels predicable as WFC basically told that story. It could be set in the far future where we’ll see how humans evolved together with the Autobots as allied. Something like the later episodes in G1. And then something bad happens… tongue.gif

Energy/energon and the supply and control of it have been like a red thread through most tf continuities, if not all? That could be worth taking a closer look at! In Animated when the Allspark was destroyed it became shards that could be re-assembled. In the first movie it was simply destroyed but the energy of it could still remain (and should according to physics). I think there was a comic that brought this up in some way?

^Nice ideas there.

I'd like to see live-action Thunderwing with a bucn of new decepticons; possibly his team from Marvel comics like Needlenose etc. or maybe Bludgeon, Strangehold and Octopunch. They could gather the remaining decepticons from Earth/Nemesis-base or something... And yeah, Matrix could be reused again in plot.

I believe (or at least I'd like to believe) that some writer (when it's extremely unlikely that Simon Furman would write a Transformers-movie biggrin.gif) might know how good story potential "other worlds", Thunderwing, Matrix and Transformers living as exiles, some looking for great power and strenght etc. have have if fully used. So it's interesting to see what kind of theme will be in TF4 and who will write it.

"Rosie, Shia And Michael May Return For The Next Transformers Live Action Movie"

Interesting "news"... I really liked DOTM and it was overall step forward to the better direction so I'd stay positive about Bayformers 4(-5) though another director and cast would be nice too. To be honest I don't think that Bay would return but who knows.

As much as I enjoyed DOTM, I really hope that this doesn't turn out to be true. To me, the live action movies lack the constant addition of new ideas that have kept the franchise from growing stale and I was really hoping that if they would do another movie, that they'd take a different approach to it. Not necessarily a completely new formula, but perhaps a new cast and maybe even a new director. Just to get some variation.

True, but as far as I can remember Statham himself hadn't confirmed anything. And IF Labeouf will be in the next cast I highly doubt that Statham will be in it. Personally I'd like to see some new faces, but for me Duhamel (Lennox), Gibson (Epps) etc. are stars enough. Transformers movie doesn't necessarily need names like Statham. On the other hand it might be that we won't see all human characters (like Simmons) in the new films, so maybe they want some big names and new leading human characters. Only time will tell, but I just can't see much use for Statham.
