The NTFA Staff is pleased to announce the dates and location for the Nordic Mini-Con 2010!

A big thanks to all who voted on this, we have been able to determine the actual date for the NTFA Mini-Con next summer, which will be June 19-20, 2010!

We took all possible considerations into account when finally setting this date, including some more practical elements as well as various nordic holidays etc., and the member input was also invaluable in this! So thank you all for helping with this, and we hope that as many as possible will be able to join us in Aalborg! smile.gif

But where in Aalborg, are you probably wonderin?

Through some various contacts I was able to secure a nice, big and semi-futuristic locale on the outskirts of southern Aalborg. The area is called "DaVinci parken", a semi-newly established housing area, with ample connections to and from, including:

* Bus, that leads straight to the air-port north of the city,
* Bus, that leads straight to the train station,
* Very short distance to the nearest freeway off-ramp for those coming by car,
* Close proximity to various hotels - both cheap and not-so-cheap.

Much more about this as we get closer to the actual event, but for those wanting to be ahead of time and book tickets/hotels, I will include a few links in the next post. Stay tuned! smile.gif

Location:

DaVinci Parken, Aalborg - in the grey over-pass thingie in the biggest mouse-over active block on "Marie Curies Alle", 9220 Aalborg Øst (Google Maps).

... and for those wondering: The place is on the 3nd floor but has an escalator - easy access for both wheelchairs and traders (with big crates of stuff to sell).

Hotels (all example prices are for the cheapest option with a 1 night stay from June 19 to June 20):

Zleep, Aalborg [2 stars] - as low as 299,- DKK if you book the smallest room and in good time, and almost walking distance to the locale,
Cabinn Aalborg [2 stars] - cheapest option 485,- DKK, and placed in downtown Aalborg. Just opened, however, and still with ample public transportation to the locale,
Hotel Scandic Aalborg [3 stars] - 845,- DKK for a room, but has that extra star, and is the closest to the locale.

More options here (danish only): Hotels in Aalborg

That's not decided yet. We have to think about entrance fees and stuff first, which might take some time.

For general information: Aalborg is also known as Ålborg. It was a surprise for me when on Finnair's home page I found only flights to Ålborg. So I hope anyone else doesn't get confused.

Double A's in danish = Å. However "Ålborg" is now-a-days more commonly written as Aalborg.

Ah. That's something that perhaps we should have pointed out ... "Aa" is an alternative to "Å" not only in Danish, but in all non-Nordic languages when you adapt the spelling of Nordic words to something that you want foreigners to be able to read (compare it to how "ä" and "æ" are often replaced with "ae", and "ö" and "ø" are replaced with "oe". It's quite common knowledge in the Scandinavian countries, but since you live in Finland you are perhaps not as familiar with the letter.

Some background for anyone who's interested: The "å" sound started out as an extended "a" in all three Scandinavian languages, and was spelled "aa" in all three. When the sound had eventually changed over a few centuries, to something closer to "o" (and today's "å"), the spelling was adjusted in Swedish, with the introduction of a new letter: an "a" with an "o" above to represent the new, o-influenced sound. In Sweden it was introduced in the early 1500's, Norway didn't follow until 1917, and Denmark waited until 1948. This late addition is why the Norwegians and the Danes have "Å" as the last letter in the alphabet, while we Swedes have it as the 27th letter, before "Ä" and "Ö". In the Finnish language the "å" is seldom or never used in Finnish words, but the letter is still present in the Finnish alphabet because of the country's close historic ties to Sweden - there are still many names (and maybe some loan words?) which contains the "å".

Proper Norwegian and Danish actually dictates that you should use "Å" instead of "Aa" nowadays, but a small number of Danish cities/municipalities have chosen to retain the original spelling, and the Danish language committee (Dansk Sprognævn) has accepted this exception. Aalborg is one of these exceptions, obviously. Sweden and Finland uses the dictated spelling (always Å), while Norway goes with the Danish municipalities' respective wishes (Aa in the case of e.g. Aalborg, Å in the case of e.g. Århus). The non-Nordic world appears to prefer the spelling that they can understand (i.e. always Aa).
