Ammended the topic title to underline the rumour aspect of this.

/Your friendly neighburhood moderator™.

But makes sense: If 1, 2 and 3 do well, why not make a 4 and a 5? Worked (to some extend) for the 80s/90s Batman movies...

A fourth and a fifth film? To be honest I doubt the concept has that much strength in it. Judging by the novel the story isn't solid enough to give us three films, even. It's reasonably enjoyable, but not much more. On a scale from 1 to 5 I give it a weak 4, and that is as a Transformers fan.
I'll see if I can write a review on it later.

Yeah, well, the movie is only partially aimed at fans -- I mean, that the real money is whether non- and/or casual fans enjoy the movie so much, that the filmmakers can see the potential in making a second and a third. Plotwise it probably won't be much, but I see it this way: More public interest in TFs, more toadying of Hasbro and Takara towards what the fans want -- toywise, that is. smile.gif So I'm already a happy camper, and I've only got "so-so+" hopes for the movie as-is. tongue.gif

The big bonus with transformers when it comes to sequels, is that it isn't really controlled by the actors. If Hugo Weaving decides he wants a lot more money or get tired of it all, for instance, they can just get somebody to play Galvatron instead. I have high hopes.

Well, I believe I'm objective enough that I can evaluate the film (or the novel, at this point) both as a TransFan and as someone uninitiated, and when I give the film (or novel) a weak 4 it is including the bonuses it gains by being a Transformers film. Were I not a Transformers fan, I would rate it lower.
It's simply not a great film (or novel), just an okay one. There are too many digressions and cases of odd behaviour - inserted into the film just to induce artificial laughs and snorts - for it to be a solid film. But I'll write more about it when I review the novel.

That's a completely different thing. The Harry Potter films are supported by the popularity of the books, so it hardly matters how good or how poor the films are. As long as people love the books, they're going to see the films as well.
But the Transformers film series has no external support of that kind. If the first films aren't strong enough to make people come back, then ... well, then people don't come back, and that's it. They have to be solid experiences, or they won't sell the sequels.

True, and the movies are very faithful to the books, so people who enjoyed Harry Potter in the books will also want to watch me movie. The Transformers movie however is only based on the toy universe, not the storyline (from what I know, at least), and most fans have already expressed concerns with the lack of recognition of the characters. So I agree with Groundsplitter here.

What the fans think about the lack of recognition is actually irrelevant. They're just a drop in the ocean compared to the total number of people who will see the Transformers film. That's why the producers can't afford to pay any attention to the fanatics who insist that everything must be exactly as it was 23 years ago.
Whatever little you'd gain by trying to satisfy the displeased G1 zombies (if you can ever satisfy a G1 zombie; it's doubtful) you would lose many times over in the large number of regular movie-goers who would ignore the film because the characters don't look cool enough.
I have a friend who became much more interested in the film when he realized the robots won't look like a car cut in half a dozen parts slightly rearranged. And he's far from alone in that sentiment. I've read many testimonies from other TransFans whose friends have said the same thing.

It's much too early to know if there will be as many as five movies. I highly doubt it though; it's extremely difficult to get enough material for a decent story even with the three movies Bay/Spielberg have agreed on doing so far. IMO it's even too early for them to agree on making a third film; a second one is easier since it will be hyped up from the first one. This first movie will be a huge success because of the hype and the excellent CGI, and the fact that it's a joint project between Bay and Spielberg (big names), and it will make enough money to justify a second movie if it in turn is likely to generate enough profit. It's always the same; get the most money out of something before the public loses interest. We'll just have to wait and see.
