Thinking back some more, I think my first ever transforming toy even before Ligier was a Go-bot (don't shoot me tongue.gif) or a cheap bootleg of such. It was a small toy car sized police interceptor. Hans-cuff from Go-bot range bears a striking resemblance to my toy. Are Go-bots original designs or are they licenced?

Found this review of GoBots Hans-Cuff.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "original designs or [...] licensed", but if we talk about the toy designs, they are clearly licensed (when the alt mode was something non-futuristic). If you talk about the toyline, then yes, that was a licensed property Tonka acquired from Bandai around the same time as Hasbro got theirs from Takara. Tonka's version of the Bandai Machine Robo line saw release in 1983 and was initially much more popular than Transformers, but was quickly overtaken by Transformers.

Part of their decline in popularity was probably because the toys were too simple, the cartoons and comics too juvenile and lacked characteristics, and the packaging being a bit uninspired (i.e. had no bio notes).

I've never had a GoBots toy myself* as I've found them rather uninspiring, but one piece in particular - Puzzler - seems like a fun and cool toy. If I could find a minty complete one for good money, I might jump. smile.gif

* I had a carded Geeper-Creeper for sale at Mini-Con '07 though, but didn't consider him "mine" as he was part of the stock I had for sale.

By original designs I mean if the toys were designed by Tonka or if they were licenced from another manufacturer, as in this case from Bandai.

Well, I'll be darned. Isn't it great that parents keep things that you thought was long lost smile.gif ? I present to you what was still the humble beginnings of a collection, or rather 2 years into what has now been a 25 year craze. These are pictures that were taken in August 1989, so my sincerest apologies for the blurriness and iffy colours; these are from the pre-digital camera era wink2.gif .

WOW! That is simply stunning! A true "blast from the past!" Heck, you even have some stuff that I'm dying to get myself right there! tongue.gif Thank you for sharing!

I was saving this for a future blog entry, but I actually have a similar picture I want to scan in. It's not technically from my childhood, but when I started collecting again in earnest, I went home to my parents' place and lined up my old childhood collection. So I have a picture of that, from before I started adding to it again. smile.gif

The funny thing is, that there are items on my picture that I no longer own and which I'm having a really hard time trying to replace... D'oh! tongue.gif

PS: I love that giant black Swatch you have there on the wall in picture 2. Gotta love the 80s! king.gif
